Background
Did you know that the Mayan didn't write like us? The Maya wrote by drawing pictures. The Mayan were architects. They were so good at drawing that they made their writing their drawings. They made their own language and wrote letters by drawing pictures. Their drawings were easy for them to make, but probably now a very advanced artist could draw "hello," and that's as far as they can draw. They called their writing "glyphs," meaning "lord," or "ajaw" in Mayan. The Maya wrote and drew every second they could, like a Mayan ball game was going on, and somebody had to report it writing it in Mayan, some disaster happened, somebody wrote that, when someone sent a letter. Some Maya even have a job of just sitting down and writing all day, writing articles, updates, newspapers, or carving a drawing on a rock. The Maya wrote so much that they had over 1,000 advanced writing glyphs, and that's why we call this the writing system.
